Become a Donor
Alder Springs is the nation's first nonprofit 501(c)(3) community designed especially for the deaf and blind. It is developed by and is owned by the North Carolina School for the Deaf at Morganton Foundation and funded entirely by private donations, grants, and loans. (It is not a HUD project; no government funding is involved.) Occupancy revenues from Alder Springs will be used for the community's operating costs, maintenance, repayment of loans, and expansion. All remaining funds will be used to enrich the educational experiences of students at the NC School for the Deaf.
Beyond Housing
The deaf are a “gathering people” who prefer living in close community because their primary language (American Sign Language) requires visual contact for free flowing interaction.
Most deaf individuals living in a hearing world experience prolonged isolation from others who speak their language. Abiding loneliness can be a difficult and very real consequence in their lives.
The blind prefer living in simple, barrier free environments that are located very close to essential services and amenities.
In addition to providing housing equipped with assistive technologies, Alder Springs creates a community where the deaf and blind are able to socialize and live together.
